Hazardous Material Testing

Prior to any renovation, it is important to consult with an A.H.E.R.A. certified building inspector at Demolition: Impossible and complete any required hazardous material testing. As a WorkSafe BC licensed company, we adhere to the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Our team includes certified Level S surveyors who possess the expertise to accurately identify and manage hazardous materials. Trust Demolition Impossible to deliver meticulous assessments and safeguard the success of your project while prioritizing the well-being of all involved.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a carcinogen that was widely used in various construction products due to its fire-resistant properties. As early as two-thousand years ago, Greek and Roman philosophers were referencing illnesses that were correlated with exposure to asbestos mines. In the middle ages, asbestos was used for various military and record-keeping purposes because bags and paper made out of asbestos were “mysteriously” fire-proof. Even in the 1800s, Italian banknotes were made using asbestos and firefighters in many countries used jackets and helmets lined with asbestos. In the seventies and eighties, evidence of the long-term health effects caused by exposure to asbestos became well-documented and the substance was soon banned for use in most products.

Prior to any renovation, it is important to consult with a qualified abatement contractor at Demolition: Impossible and complete any required hazardous material testing.

If hazardous materials are identified, they must be removed by a qualified abatement contractor to ensure everyone involved is safe. Demolition: Impossible’s abatement & remediation services exceed Provincial regulations while maintaining efficiency and timely project completion.

Abatement & Remediation

THE MISSION:

  • Please do not do this. Exposure to asbestos fibres is incredibly harmful, and only a qualified abatement contractor should be removing materials that contain them.

  • Non-asbestos-containing materials can be removed before or after abatement. Abatement protocols only apply to asbestos-containing materials.

  • Abatement costs more than regular demolition for a few reasons. The first is that abatement requires extensive setup prior to abatement itself. We must set up “containment” for the space, which includes covering all surfaces with poly sheeting and decontamination rooms. Second, the actual demolition of asbestos-containing materials is slower because labourers must wear suits to ensure they are not exposed to any asbestos fibres and spray a fibre-locking glue on any surfaces the asbestos-containing materials were removed from.
